Do I Need to Eat More Greens?

Posted by Jidy Archibald on

Remember how when you were a kid, your parents used to tell you how important it was to eat your vegetables? They’d say things like ‘if you eat your vegetables, you’ll grow up to be big and strong’!

Did you pay any attention to them? If not (like me!!), you really should have. Vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, are loaded full of the nutrients that our bodies need to survive and function effectively on a daily basis.

Health experts are quick to talk about the importance of eating your greens, but what is it about green veggies that makes them so effective? Well, that’s what we’re going to be looking at today. We’ll be looking at the healthy body benefits of green veggies, and why you need to make sure you’re consuming enough to get the lean, healthy body everyone wants.

Greens are rich in antioxidants – When it comes to nutrient contents, green vegetables are tough to beat. Whether it’s kale, broccoli, spinach, chard, spirulina, or anything else, greens are packed full of nutrients. In particular, you’ll find very high concentrations of antioxidants in greens. Antioxidants help to fight and prevent oxidative stress in the body and can therefore help to fight inflammation and protect your cells. Antioxidants provide significant anti-cancer benefits to the human body, which is why you should almost certainly try to eat more.

They boost the immune system – Another great benefit of consuming greens, both in whole food form and supplement form, is the fact that they help to strengthen and boost the immune system. The immune system helps to fight and protect you against illness and disease, and so the stronger your immune system is, the healthier you will be. The immune system thrives on vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants – all of which can be found in greens. In particular, the vitamin C found in these veggies helps to really boost white blood cell counts, helping to make your immune system stronger as a result.

Rich in minerals – When we think of nutrients, it’s often vitamins that get all of the attention. While they are indeed very good for us, we can’t under-estimate the importance of minerals. Minerals play important roles in a number of physiological processes within the human body and if we aren’t getting enough we won’t see the benefits. Greens such as spinach for example, are packed full of iron and calcium, which help to give us energy and strengthen our bones and muscles respectively. In fact, gram for gram, there is more calcium found in spinach than there is in milk. There are of course, plenty of other minerals found in greens, including: magnesium, zinc, manganese, and potassium, to name but a few.

Great source of fibre – If you want to enjoy optimal digestive health, fibre is very important. Fibre helps to promote digestive health, it boosts nutrient absorption rates, it helps to add bulk to your stools, it helps to fight inflammation in the digestive tract, and much more besides. Virtually all greens are packed full of soluble and insoluble fibre, making them fantastic for digestive health and wellness.

Finally…..  Now that we’re grown-ups, and many of us are parents ourselves, (saying the same things to our own kids our parents said to us….lol) we need to lead by example.
